How to install VCSA6 in VMware Workstation

Last week I was installing my Vsphere 6 homelab in VMware Workstation.

Because I didn’t wanted to install the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) on my virtual ESXi host I tried to install it directly in VMware Workstation. I am using VMware Workstation 12 PRO.

In this post I will explain how to install VCSA6 in VMware Workstation.

This post explains how to deploy VCSA in VMware Workstation.

VCSA 6 in VMware Workstation

1) Download the VMware vCenter Server Appliance from VMware (.iso file)

2) Extract the content of the ISO file

3) Rename the vmware-vcsa file to vmware-vcsa.ova

Rename vmware-vcsa to .ova

4) Open vmware-vcsa.ova with VMware Workstation

Rename vmware-vcsa.ova

5) Import the Virtual Machine (Do not power on!)

6) To make sure the Vcenter Appliance will configure the correct settings we need to modify the created .vmx file. Locatie this file where your Virtual Machines are stored. Open the file with a text editor.

7) Add the following parameters. Change the network settings to your own settings.

guestinfo.cis.appliance.net.addr.family = "ipv4"
guestinfo.cis.appliance.net.mode = "static"
guestinfo.cis.appliance.net.addr = "192.168.1.200"
guestinfo.cis.appliance.net.prefix = "24"
guestinfo.cis.appliance.net.gateway = "192.168.1.254"
guestinfo.cis.appliance.net.dns.servers = "192.168.1.100"
guestinfo.cis.vmdir.password = "vmware"
guestinfo.cis.appliance.root.passwd = "vmware"

8) Save the file and power on the Virtual Machine. The VCSA will now be automatically deploed with the basic settings you provided in the configuration.

9) You can login to the vCenter with the following credentials

administrator@vsphere.local
